Sodium is an alkali metal. It is a vital mineral which, together with chloride and potassium, is one of the most important electrolytes in the body. As it is the second most common ion in seawater, it is usually available in sufficient quantities.

Possible problems: The use of poor quality sea salts or the application of unbalanced supply concepts can change the composition of the aquarium water in an unnatural and life-threatening way in the long term. This is the feared change in the ionic balance (ionic shift), which represents a considerable stress factor for the inhabitants of the reef.
